Update from DiGi in Kuala Lumpur

Living abroad is a change, and moving all the way to Malaysia is a rather big change. And so far, it has been a very welcome change. I really enjoy living in Kuala Lumpur, and working here. Malaysians are nice people, and I feel that I have been taken good care of in DiGi so far.

Living and driving
About two months ago I arrived in KL. Day one at work in DiGi in Kuala Lumpur can be summed in two words: “Information overload”; New people, new office, new culture and a new car, most of which I have gotten used to. Although driving in KL can be a challenge at times. First of all, driving is on the “wrong” side for me. The roads are good, but traffic is much busier and the driving style a lot more aggressive. Getting home from work can take 20 min, or two hours, depending on the traffic. And the hardest thing in traffic so far, is following the signs. Sometimes they just disappear, which can be frustrating. But I’m getting used to it.

Working in DiGi
'Back yard' view at the DiGi office
Being part of the Business Development team in DiGi has so far been very interesting. As the name gives away, it is about finding new business possibilities and new revenue streams. The projects I work on are still hidden in the big “secret box”, so I’m sorry that I can’t tell you more about them. However, working with my new colleaues is great fun. To really get the team spirit, the whole Marketing department is going for a teambuilding outing this weekend. Destination: Pangkor, a small island on the west coast of Malaysia. I’ll let you in on the juicy details next time. ;-)

Football and Futsal
Europe is focusing on Austria and Switzerland for the Euro2008 these days, and so are loads of football fans in Malaysia. The games are popular, even though they are played in the middle of the night. So what could be more natural than to have a DiGi Euro2008 Futsal championship? For those of you who are not familiar with the sport, it is indoor five-a-side football. The different departments have teams, and even the management has their own team (they represent Sweden, of course, the CEO is Swedish). It is really a big thing, and the teams even have their own cheerleaders. I play for Germany (Norway is not part of the Euro this time), and sadly we were defeated by the Polish team. I’ll keep you posted on the development in the Futsal championships :-)

Till next time, expect the unexpected.
