Being a Telenor trainee

13 December, 2007
By Niklas Lind
Having now been a trainee at Telenor Sweden for two months it is really interesting to be encouraged to blog about your experiences so far. In many ways the blogging sums up what being a trainee at Telenor is all about. Performance followed by reflection.
Why should I reflect?
Initially I was a little bit sceptical about all this reflecting, but as time passed, I have realised that taking time to stop and think about what I have done is very useful. It concretises my often vague hunches about how I am developing. And to add to that, as the next “reflection session” will take part in Malaysia during Swedish winter, I suppose I can not complain
What Telenor is like, and how I fit in
So what is my main impression of Telenor so far? A Norwegian giant with an international growth complex. Opening up for opportunities abroad, but also huge opportunities to shape your work by gaining experience in different local markets. This is why I like working for them (oh yeah, should probably say us now
)
The desire to grow ensures that top management is susceptible to new ideas. It can hardly get any better when you are a newly graduate, and your main competence is being a fresh brain full of ideas.
My work so far
Being fresh off school and starting with clean sheets has ensured that I, after 2 months, have been a key resource in an international expansion plan for a new business area. In addition to that I have led quite a large project in the hunt for additional revenues and cost savings. So far I think it has gone quite well, but who knows, I just sent the final presentation to my boss… 23:22 is the time by the way. It’s fun, but requires hard work at times.

Hi Rashid!
Thanks for the congratulations and your comment! Are you thinking of applying?
As for what I think I have that contributed the most I think it is two different characteristics of mine that contributed. I believe I am relatively socially skilled, this enables me to know when to speak and when to listen. In conjunction with that, i do not get stressed easily, allowing me to remain calm and true to myself in high pressure situations.
If you ask me, I think these two qualities are the main reason that I managed to get accepted to this program. But i honestly do not know, will have to ask the programme leader who hired me about why I managed to get in some day
If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask me.
Regards, Niklas

Hi Saima!
Nice to get a comment from a colleague so far away! Would be really curious to find out more about your project in GrameenPhone as well.
I can not tell you about the speifics of my task on this blog as the projet is not yet official outside of Telenor, but I can tell you about my general tasks in the project.
The project has not yet been fully supported by the board. Therefore focus has been to clearly, and in a credible manner, illustrate the future potential for Telenor as well as how we should go about achieving this potential. My role has been to do all the number crunching (i.e. to try to estimate the future revenue streams) as well as to struture and create the presentation. As with any estimation of future revenue streams, main problem is credibility. Therefore i’ve used one top-down and one bottom-up scenario as well as several different calculations methods. In addition to this we have projected the Swedish historial Business Case. Luckily for us, all these different methods have given us roughly the same potential for the top-down and bottom-up scenarios
the presentation is being held today and I will get feedback today or tomorrow, a little bit nervous…
Hope you managed to get through my pretty long answer, if there is anything that is unclear don’t hesitate to ask me for clarifiations. Good luck with your project!
Regards, Niklas

Hi Adam,
We will have 4 days there with the following, to me known, purposes:
- Get to know the Malaysian Operations and people
- Get to know the other trainess within the trainee program better (if I have understood it corretly a new task, to be solved jointly by the trainee group, will be introduced
- We will work on group dynamics and our personal projects (at the start we all defined a personal competence/characteristic that we wanted to develop during the sope of the trainee ship)
Apart from that, I am looking forward to good food and some diving the weekend after the conference
Merry christmas to all of you!
